Among the many cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic, one that has affected drivers in Ontario is the provincewide cancellation of in-vehicle road tests.
The cancellation of road tests has been an issue that has lasted for months, but a recent announcement confirms that they are reopening.
In an interview over the phone, Officer Brett Moore of the Toronto Police Service commented on the cancellations.
“There’s a huge backlog of tests that have been created due to COVID-19 for these young drivers. As a result, thousands of people have been affected by this,”
Regardless of their license status, many young drivers have continued to take the wheel. This has resulted in an increase in traffic stops.
“I just stopped a young driver the other day. He was a G1 driver who missed his test, and he took the chance of getting in his vehicle with an expired license. It’s unfortunate that this is affecting so many people, but we still have to follow the rules,”
Moore continued by suggesting how these drivers should proceed.
“It’s one of those things where the key message has to be, your license status still stands regardless of whether or not your test has been cancelled. Don’t take a chance, follow the rules that you’ve been following all along,”
Road tests reopening
These cancellations are discouraging for those looking to get their license soon, however, a recent announcement confirms the reopening of road tests.
On Monday, the Ministry of Transportation announced on Twitter that all in-vehicle road tests will resume on June 14. This means if your test was not previously cancelled, your test will still be valid on the scheduled date.
Although tests are opening back up, it may be difficult to book one anytime soon. Upon reviewing the website, it is evident that time slots for a test are backed up for several months.
