Demerit points are used to keep the roads safe by revoking licence privileges from repeat-offenders or drivers who commit serious infractions. As a driver in Ontario, you will receive a warning letter if you accumulate 6-8 demerit points, a second warning letter for 9-14 demerit points, and a 30-day licence suspension for 15 or more demerit points. If you continue driving during your suspension, you can lose your licence for up to two years.
For drivers carrying a restricted licence, such as a G1 or G2, less demerit points are needed to be penalized. You will receive a warning letter for 2-5 demerit points, a second warning letter for 6-8 points, and a 60-day licence suspension for 9 or more demerit points. As with fully-licensed Ontario drivers, you can lose your licence for up to two years if you violate your suspension.
Demerit points can be applied to Ontario drivers anywhere in any Canadian province or territory, as well as the states of New York and Michigan in the United States of America. Make sure to always follow the rules of the road, no matter where you are, so you can keep a clean record and never face punishment for poor driving or have your licence revoked.
