Driving Lesson 3 (SP)

"Backing Up" Structured Practice

How to Drive a Car:  Backing Up

To practice how to drive a car find an empty mall parking lot and try various turns.  Practice backing into parking spaces.  After each attempt get out of the car and see how you are positioned in the space.  Make this a part of your Drivers Ed checklist.

Knowing how to back up is necessary when you learn how to drive a car.  Here are some tips for Backing Up:

  • Steer in the direction you want the back of the car to go
  • Turn your head so you’re looking where you want to go (over your right shoulder to see the back of the car)
  • Hover your foot over the brake so you can stop quickly
  • Do not use your gas pedal
